Your route: International relation General information for students Checklist before leaving home

International students will need the following documents :
(see also section on Visa, Resident's Permit and Health and Welfare).

Passport or identity card (check expiry dates).

Visa
Student visa "type D" is compulsory for students who are citizens of countries that are not members of the European Economic Area, (the European Economic Area includes the twenty five member states of the European Union plus Iceland, Norway and Liechtenstein). Swiss citizens are exempted from visa requirements.

Please contact the nearest French Consulate or Embassy in your country for details. For more information : www.diplomatie.fr.

Birth certificate or other official certification proving their nationality and issued by the appropriate authorities in the country of origin (showing parents names and dates of birth). This document must be accompanied by a translation in French or in English

Proof of income or financial resources sufficient to cover their stay in France (see also section on Resident's Permit)

Health insurance
the European Health Insurance Card or the E128 Form (duly validated by the appropriate authorities in their country of origin).

compulsory insurance coverage with either LMDE or MGEL (approximately 180 €) for all other students

Student's identity card from home institution (this may be useful before receiving an ID card from the UTT).

4 passport-style photographs against a light background

Any documents which may be needed if students decide to rent accommodation through a lettings agency (see section on accommodation).

The cost of living for students in France is one of the cheapest in the Western World. When students are planning their budget they should divide their expenses into 2 categories :

1. Their regular living expenses on a monthly basis : about 500 €.

2 -The additional expenses associated with travelling, living and studying in a foreign country which are not included in the regular monthly expenses (tourism, leisure activities, rent deposit, Student Union's subscription…). For students from non UE countries there is a compulsory insurance coverage, (see 2.7), which costs 180 per year.

Students should make sure to have either Travellers' Checks (which are useful when opening a bank account), or an International Credit Card (Visa or MasterCard). Whichever type of accommodation they choose, they will have to pay rent and a deposit when they arrive. If possible, they should make photocopies of the official documents required (see 2.2.1.)

They must not forget to bring the brochures, maps of Troyes and bus routes which were sent to them : they may need them on arrival.

They must remember to bring some bed sheets and a few kitchen utensils.

Above all, they must notify us, well in advance, of their date and time of arrival (preferably during the daytime on a weekday and not at the weekend) so we can arrange for someone to meet them.
